R(O)LLTYPE
Experiemental Typography
2023
Rolltype is a typographic concept and identity inspired by the Korean dish kimbap (김밥). The project reinterprets the visual and structural language of kimbap, a roll of layered ingredients wrapped in seaweed, as a metaphor for typographic order and cultural layering.
The name Rolltype combines the ideas of “rolling” and “type,” encapsulating the rhythmic process of wrapping, stacking, and composing both food and letters. It reflects how design, like kimbap, is built through repetition and variation, with each layer contributing to a unified whole.
The logo and graphic system emphasize circular motion, balance, and modularity. Repetition becomes texture, and the grid serves as a visual table, organizing elements into compositions that echo the precision and care of Korean culinary craft.
Through Rolltype, the everyday act of eating is reframed as a typographic experience, a souvenir of culture translated into form, rhythm, and taste.
